The Best Reformer Machines for at Home or in the Studio
Do you want a reformer machine for personal use, teaching private reformer classes at home, or your own Pilates studio? We break down the brands that will give you the best bang for your buck for the best reformer machines.
STAR CHOICE
I’ve used the Merrithew At Home SPX Reformer in my studio since I opened ten years ago. They are a favourite among instructors for their versatility and high-quality build.
I’ve found these the most durable, making them ideal reformer for group classes and their stylish design makes them perfect for filming ‘The Class Plan’ (my new app) and Dynamic Pilates TV.
It’s actually designed with beginners in mind. It’s user-friendly with adjustable footbars and shoulder rests, easy-to-change resistance levels. Also, it even comes with instructional DVDs to help new users get started. Perfect for those who are new to Pilates and want something easy to setup and use. They are a fairly slim build, making them easy to fit into London studios, which can often big quite snug.

MOST DURABLE FOR SPACIOUS STUDIOS
If you’re going to be hosting multiple classes a day you need a brand that is built to last. The Balanced Body Allegro 2 is renowned for its robust construction and high-quality materials, making it one of the best reformer machines for personal and professional reformer use. Its frame is made of anodised aluminium, ensuring it can withstand frequent use over a long period. Also, its precision carriage rollers provide smooth, silent operation, ideal for both group classes and a more low-key workout at home.

BEST VALUE FOR HOME USE
The AeroPilates 435 Plus offers a combination of affordability and functionality. As a no-frills piece of equipment, it has all the essential reformer features you’ll need for a classic home workout without breaking the bank. If you’re setting up a studio, I would invest in more high end equipment as the cheaper reformers will likely wear down quicker if used for regular group glasses.
£699
And for the more seasoned Pilates fan, I would recommend the Peak Pilates Fit Reformer. It is compact and lightweight making it perfect for home reformer workouts. I love that it’s easy to move and store, while still offering a full range of Pilates exercises. Also, its sleek and tasteful design will ensure it’s a stylish addition to any home gym, with not a garish clashing colour in sight!
£2,549
MOST VERSATILE
The Cadilac and Tower add-ons by Align-Pilates will bring so much versatility to your reformer workout. It’s definitely one for the more seasoned Pilates pro, but if you want to step up your game, or want to offer private clients a more varied workout, Align’s selection of attachable frames are a firm industry favourite!
Pricing starts at £974.99 (incl VAT) for Half cadilacs.
Top Tips for Avoiding Wear and Tear
Any Reformer bed is a big investment, and so it’s worth doing what you can to reduce early wear and tear. The first places that start to thin are the shoulder rests and the carriage itself so buying reformer mats will add an extra layer of protection. The best reformer mats that I use are the MoveActive mats and have found they make a huge difference.
Also, abrasive cleaning fluids can eat away at the fabric and lead to premature cracks, so I advise using the revolutionary silver cleaning cloths with water, which have natural anti-bacterial qualities within the fibre and are just as effective whilst being more environmentally friendly.
